Editor's note: In memory of a legendary hero Wu Zhihe from the Dong Ethnic Group in China's southwest Guizhou Province, people carry sedan chairs on the seventh day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which happened to fall on Feb. 14, this year.
According to the legend, Wu slew a devil disguised as a white snake with his astonishingly strong arms, and mediated conflicts within the village by defeating several warriors, bringing about peace and stability. To show their gratitude, the villagers carried Wu, promoted to be a general in the southwestern region, in a sedan chair to receive the homage paid by the local people. The custom has passed down through many generations of the Dong minority.
