The China Earthquake Administration (CEA) and the Yunnan provincial government signed an agreement on Friday which is expected to improve earthquake monitoring, warning and relief work in quake-vulnerable Yunnan Province.

The two sides have agreed to promote seismic surveillance and post-quake relief so as to minimize loss to future geological hazards.

Under the agreement, the CEA and the provincial government will work together to set up an early warning system, especially focusing on the key sectors of transportation, power supply, oil and gas networks.

An information sharing and quick response system will be established and staff will be trained, the agreement said.

A national lab with top experts on seismic studies, earthquake forecasting and quake prevention will also be founded in Yunnan, it added.

On Oct. 12, the CEA signed a similar cooperative agreement with Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China.

Multiple earthquakes, with the strongest measured at 5.7 magnitude, jolted a mountainous area on the borders of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces on Sept. 7 and killed 81 people. Endi
