Railway police have handled 5,117 drug-related cases since the beginning of 2012, detaining 5,144 suspects, according to police authorities under the Ministry of Railways.

Railway police have confiscated nearly 668 kg of drugs since the start of 2012, a statement said Thursday.

Railway police have enhanced checks of cargo, passengers and their belongings to discourage the transportation of drugs on trains.

Police also used tips provided by detained suspects to bust several drug trafficking rings, the statement said.

In March 2012, police in southwest China's city of Chengdu detained a suspect who was attempting to carry drugs onto a train. Clues obtained by questioning the suspect helped police shut down three local drug production sites and detain 21 suspects. Endi
