Police in east China's Fujian Province said Tuesday that they have arrested five people, including three Taiwanese men, for attempting to smuggle over 1 tonne of narcotics into Taiwan.

The three Taiwanese men, identified by their surnames as Jiang, Chen and Luo, were detained in Fuzhou, provincial capital of Fujian, on March 13, after local police found that some of the wood carvings the men purchased had been hollowed out and filled with ketamine, said a spokesman with the Public Security Bureau of Fuzhou.

Police seized a total of 810 packages containing 1.07 tonnes of ketamine from the sculptures, which the suspects had planned to transport to the island's Keelung Port. The value of the drugs is estimated at 30 million yuan (4.8 million U.S. dollars).

Two suppliers from the mainland were also arrested in connection with the case, while another supplier, also Taiwanese, fled to the island. Endi
