An alliance was launched by Chinese publishers on Monday as part of efforts to prevent the vulgarization of children's books, according to the Publishers Association of China (PAC).
The alliance, initiated by the PAC and joined by 72 publishers, called for children's books not to contain violence and pornographic contents.
Publishers of children's books are asked to comply with relevant laws and regulations and publish materials in order to meet children's reading needs, according to a written proposal issued by the alliance.
They are also asked to establish scientific and rigorous working procedures in topic selection, composition and distribution, to ensure quality, the proposal read, adding that those that have quality issues will be recalled "unconditionally".
The proposal urged relevant publishers to "resolutely" put an end to the transaction of book registration numbers.
Last Saturday, China Pictorial Publishing House and Shaanxi Normal University Publishing House were ordered to suspend their operations for three months, as a result of releasing children's books with pornographic contents.
Three other periodicals based in Shanxi, Henan and Shandong provinces were also ordered to suspend operations by provincial authorities for spreading superstition, violence, obscenity and erotic contents.
An official with the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television said it will beef up daily supervision on the publishing of children's books. Endi
