A local court sentenced a former law enforcement chief to death with a two-year reprieve on Monday in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region after finding him guilty of bribe-taking and abuse of power.

Yang Hanzhong, formerly deputy head of the Communist Party's political and legal affairs committee in the region, stood trial at Baotou Intermediate People's Court.

Yang, 59, had served as the mayor and party chief of Manzhouli city in the region as well as other positions before he became the deputy law enforcement chief of Inner Mongolia.

The court said between 2000 and 2012 Yang took bribes on 49 occasions from 19 persons worth of more than 40 million yuan (6.5 million U.S. dollars), in addition to 350,000 U.S. dollars and 40,000 Australian dollars.

In exchange, Yang granted them favors in housing development projects, bidding for construction projects, promotion of officials, and criminal cases.

In a housing project, Yang ordered the local government to pay 49.46 million yuan to residents for their homes taken by a housing developer, which should have paid the money.

The court ordered that all of Yang's personal assets be seized, and deprived him of political rights for life.

Yang said in court that he will not appeal. Endite
