The primary purpose of the exhibition is to raise awareness of wildlife conservation, as the 1,600 pandas highlight the fact that there are only 1,600 giant pandas in the wild, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin said at a press conference on Monday.

The "1,600 pandas" exhibition was designed by the French papier-mache artist Paulo Grangeon.

The endangered Taiwan black bears will also be featured in the exhibition to spotlight the endemic species.

The "1,600 pandas" exhibition originated from a joint project by the World Wildlife Fund and Paulo Grangeon in 2008 in Paris. The exhibition was taken to some 20 cities around the world. Taipei is the first city in Asia to host the display. Endi
