Educational departments are stepping up preparations for China's annual national college entrance exam, which is scheduled for this weekend.

Known as the "gaokao" in China, this year's exam will be taken by 9.39 million candidates, up 270,000 from 2013.

A statement released on Thursday by the Ministry of Education urged educational departments and schools to strengthen safety management, arrangements for examination sites and logistical supplies.

According to the ministry, visually impaired candidates will be offered braille test papers and help from special personnel, and local governments should be ready for emergency responses to ensure examinees' smooth commute in the case of traffic jams.

Also, local governments are asked to prepare for possible natural disasters such as earthquake, high temperatures, rainstorms and floods to guarantee that all exams go ahead.

The exams will be mainly held on June 7 and 8, and might extend to June 9 in some regions. Endi
