Chinese shares closed slightly higher on Wednesday as traditional sectors including finance and coal outshone smaller growth enterprises.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.14 percent to finish at 2,078.49 points. The Shenzhen Component Index moved up 0.04 percent to close at 7,375.31 points.

Total turnover on the two bourses expanded from 211.9 billion yuan (34.4 billion U.S. dollars) the previous trading day to 228.7 billion yuan.

The financial sector and the coal sector led the rises, up 0.79 percent and 0.76 percent, respectively.

Huadian Energy Company Limited, a state-owned company based in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, surged 10.1 percent to 3.27 yuan per share after it announced a decision on equity transfer on Wednesday.

Bucking the trend, the ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, plunged 2.73 percent to finish at 1,293.09 points. Endi
