The Chinese mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) extended condolences on Sunday to the family of a Taiwan tourist killed on Saturday in Sichuan Province.

The tourist surnamed Wu died after being hit by a fallen tree following heavy rainstorms near Mount Emei, a scenic resort. He was traveling in a group tour with 16 people when they were asked to get off their bus and walk to safety after rain-triggered landslides disrupted road traffic.

Four others in the tour were injured. Two are still in hospital. The rest of the group went back to Taiwan on Sunday afternoon along with ashes of the victim.

In a letter to the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation, the ARATS offered deep condolences to the victim's family and expressed sympathy to the families of the injured.

It said to request more effective measures to strengthening tourist facilities and ensuring safety of Taiwan tourists in the mainland. Endi
