Blast demolition was carried out on a 118-meter office building in Xi'an City Sunday morning, the highest building ever blasted in China.

The total floor area of the 27-story building, including a basement level, covered more than 37,000 square meters. It was finished in 1999, but was never put into use.

Authorities said the building had stood empty too long for it to be transformed for other use.

A total of 1.4 tonnes of explosives were installed in more than 12,000 locations inside the building, according to the demolition company.

Local government said a commerce and entertainment complex will be built on the site in the next five years. Endi
