Four starry-eyed Beijing civil servants have been disciplined for abandoning their work posts when a celebrity came into their office, according to the Beijing discipline inspection watchdog.

The four property-registration center employees recognized pop singer Wang Fei among their clients on April 17, according to the Communist Party of China Beijing municipal commission for discipline inspection.

They ignored the queue of people waiting for them, instead choosing to pose for photographs with the singer and ask for autographs, which "seriously disturbed the order in the hall", said the statement released on Wednesday.

They ignored the right to privacy of their client, the statement said, resulting in many others also snapping pictures and sharing them online.

Wang's agent, Chen Jiaying, concurred saying the incident was "an infringement of privacy."

The director of the center, Fan Mingyue, received a warning from the Chaoyang discipline inspection commission, and the three other employees were handed administrative warnings. Endi
