BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Sunday decided to posthumously honor late geophysicist Huang Danian as an "outstanding CPC member."

A statement of the CPC central leadership noted that Huang had made outstanding contributions in education and scientific research, and had devoted his life to national prosperity and people's wellbeing.

He showed his loyalty to the Party and selfless devotion to duty, the statement said.

Huang died from illness on Jan. 8 at the age of 58.

About two months ago, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, praised Huang for his excellent service, calling on the public to learn from his patriotism, professional dedication, and the noble spirit of being indifferent to fame and wealth while dedicated to the country.

Huang, known for his expertise in deep earth exploration technology, studied and worked in Britain for 18 years before returning to China in 2009. Over the ensuing years, he made a series of major achievements, helping China become one of the world's leaders in a number of technical fields. Enditem
