KUNMING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Some 17 medical workers from Myanmar are currently studying traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at a university in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said Monday.

They are taking part in a three-week training program at Yunnan University of TCM. They are learning the theory of acupuncture and will undertake clinical practice.

"Traditional medicine of the two countries have similarities, but they are also distinct from each other. Mutual exchange and study will be very important for the development of traditional medicine in the two countries," said Zheng Jin, deputy head of Yunnan Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission.

He said medical staff from Myanmar will gain a basic knowledge of acupuncture and massage. Chinese medical staff will also learn traditional medicine methods from their peers from Myanmar.

U Soe Paing, Consul General of Myanmar based in Kunming, said that Chinese acupuncture and massage are very popular in Myanmar.

Exchanges and cooperation between China and Myanmar in the fields of medicine and health care can benefit the people of both countries, he added.

Yunnan and Myanmar have strengthened cooperation in a variety of fields in recent years. Yunnan has provided training in health care, education, culture for Myanmar's workers, said Zheng. Enditem
