BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, led by heavyweight shares.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went up 2.74 percent to 2,779.37 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.98 percent higher at 8,674.03 points.

Combined turnover of the two bourses exceeded 310 billion yuan (about 45.3 billion U.S. dollars), up from 291.1 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Chinese stocks rose firmly across the board as investors snapped up shares hit by recent losses, with mining services, general chemical and cement sectors leading the gains.

Centrally administered state-owned enterprises witnessed robust gains, with China Railway Construction Corporation Limited rising by the daily limit of 10 percent.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.68 percent to close at 1,479.44 points. Enditem
