1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher Monday

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.11 percent, at 2,698.47.

The Shenzhen Component Index rebounded in the afternoon to close 0.68 percent higher at 8,414.15 after losing 0.54 percent in the morning session.

More than 2,100 stocks gained on the two bourses, while about 1,100 stocks declined.

Combined daily turnover on the two bourses stood at 264.74 billion yuan (about 38.64 billion U.S. dollars), slightly down from 265.5 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Stocks related to electronics, finance and iron and steel gained, while sectors in medical equipment, environmental protection and agriculture led the declines.

China Unicom rose 4.44 percent to close at 5.65 yuan.

Hundsun Technologies gained 3.95 percent to end at 51.01 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, rose 0.1 percent to close at 1,435.69. Enditem
