1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.60 percent at 2,561.61 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.91 percent higher at 7,365.21 points.

Combined turnover at the two bourses stood at 258.54 billion yuan (about 37.41 billion U.S. dollars), up from 236.07 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The electronic information sector gained the most on Wednesday, with the sub-index up 2.64 percent. China National Software & Service Company Limited rose by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 25.03 yuan per share.

Media and entertainment sector also showed strong performance, with the sub-index up 2.03 percent.

Bucking the upward trend, sectors including hotel and tourism, material trading and oil declined.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.25 percent to close at 1,231.86 points. Enditem
