SHIJIAZHUANG, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The leakage of the toxic gas vinyl chloride led to the blasts that killed 23 people in the city of Zhangjiakou, north China's Hebei Province, local authorities said Friday at a press conference.

According to the investigation, the vinyl chloride leaked from the gas holder and spread to the road outside the Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., causing the blasts, the city government said.

The blasts occurred at around 0:40 a.m. Wednesday and engulfed many vehicles on the roadsides.

Among the 22 injured, four have been discharged from hospitals. Others are in stable condition.

Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. is affiliated with a subsidiary of China National Chemical Corporation, according to Shenghua's website.

Further investigation is underway. Enditem
