BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have handled over 13,000 cases of drunk driving and about 58,000 cases of driving under the influence (DUI) in 20 days between Nov. 14 and Dec. 3, the Ministry of Public Security said Thursday.
Launched on Nov. 14, a campaign mobilized traffic police across the country to check for drunk driving and DUIs.
The number of traffic accidents caused by drunk driving or DUIs has dropped significantly during the period as a result, according to the ministry.
Drunk driving is a crime under Chinese law, while the less severe offense of DUI may lead to administrative punishment including short-term detention. Enditem
