Guangdong earns 17th consecutive win in CBA

XI'AN, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Guangdong defeated Zhejiang 107-103 in the 17th round of the Chinese Basketball Association league (CBA) on Saturday, keeping its unbeaten record in the season.

Zhejiang held on a two-point advantage before the final quarter, making its hope of terminating Guangdong's 16-game winning streak alive. Zhou Peng's key three pointer helped the CBA powerhouse turn the table in the 4th quarter and enlarge his team's advantages to eight with 60 seconds left on the clock.

Zhejiang once narrowed the gap to two and used foul strategy in the last few seconds, but Ren Junfei hit two free throws and brought the precious victory to Guangdong.

Yi Jianlian contributed 21 points and eight rebounds to Guangdong team, while Zhejiang's Marcus Denmon earned 23 points, plus 11 assists. Guangdong's next opponent is Tongxi, the title favorite may extend its unbeaten record on December 11.

Jilin encountered a tough start when facing against Bayi on its home ground. Both sides couldn't stop each other from scoring until Cui Jinming and Chai Changyi led the home team to launch a 9-0 spurt at the end of the first quarter, helping Jilin lead 31-18 in the first 12 minutes.

Chai continued his superb form in the second quarter, helping Jilin build up a huge lead. Although Bayi's head coach Wang Zhizhi tried many ways in order to narrow the gap, Chai who earned 20 points in the first half threw Jilin's fans into frenzy. Jilin entered the second half with a 34-point lead.

Maciej Lampe scored 23 points with 12 minutes on the clock, killing off the suspense of the game. At last, Jilin smashed Bayi 113-92.

"I should communicate more with my boys, telling them what to do when falling behind," said Wang Zhizhi.

"I hope the defeat could become a driving force behind the players progresses." Wang added.

In the other two games played on Saturday, Guangsha downed Shanghai 102-99, Shenzhen beat Qingdao 111-101. Enditem
