MANAMA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A Bahraini woman made history on Wednesday after being appointed as the Speaker of the new Parliament, Bahrain News Agency reported.

Fauzia Zainal, who defeated her two male competitors, was elected the parliament chairwoman with 25 out of the 40 votes.

The 40 lawmakers, including six women, also elected a first vice chairman and second vice chairman.

Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa sent a cable of congratulations to Zainal after she was elected.

"The election of the first woman speaker of the Council of Representatives represents a quantum leap forward and source of pride for the Kingdom of Bahrain which has spared no effort to empower women," King Hamad said in a statement. Enditem
