1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.15 percent at 2,465.29, and the Shenzhen Component Index closing 1.25 percent lower at 7,149.27.

The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 226.26 billion yuan (about 33.04 billion U.S. dollars), down from 239.82 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most shares lost, with losers outnumbering gainers 784 to 563 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,040 to 961 on the Shenzhen bourse.

The biopharmaceutical industry and medical device industry lost the most. Huadong Medicine declined by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 23.81 yuan per share, while Lepu Medical Technology (Beijing) lost 8.36 percent to close at 19.07 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 1.74 percent to close at 1,228.77. Enditem
