MALE, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) said on Thursday that it had begun the process to relocate the island's main harbor to Thilafushi in the west of capital Male.

MPL CEO Shahid Ali was quoted by local media as saying that the relocation of the Male Commercial Harbor would be carried out in phases after concerns were raised over congestion at the harbor which led to lengthy waiting periods for customers to clear goods.

Ali said while the ideal solution would be expanding the harbor, it has been deemed impossible due to lack of space in the area.

As the relocation of the harbor remains the only solution, the MPL had decided the most suitable solution was to relocate it to Thilafushi, Ali added. Enditem
