1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares end higher Friday

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rising 1.42 percent to 2,596.01.

The Shenzhen Component Index increased 1.49 percent to end at 7,581.39.

Trading volumes jumped. Combined turnover of stocks in the two indices expanded to 326.65 billion yuan (about 48.25 billion U.S. dollars) from 294 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Entertainment shares and those related to the Tianjin Free Trade Zone led the increases. BanBao Co., a Guangdong-based toy manufacturer, climbed 6.26 percent to 12.56 yuan. Tianjin Port Co. added 3.08 percent to 7.7 yuan.

Technology and media shares posted a lackluster performance. Shenzhen Beauty Star, a technology company specializing in eco-packaging, retreated by the daily limit of 10 percent to 18.3 yuan per share. Hunan TV&Broadcast Intermediary Co. fell 7.62 percent to 6.91 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, rose 1.45 percent to close at 1,269.5. Enditem
