KHARTOUM, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sudan has received assistance from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) including fuel and wheat, Sudan's Oil and Gas Minister Azhari Abdul-Ghadir announced Wednesday.

The minister made the announcement at a press conference in capital Khartoum, where he said that Russia, the UAE and Turkey offered to provide assistance to Sudan to face the current economic crisis.

"We have received assistance from the UAE ... including fuel, wheat and others," he said, adding that Sudan accepted the aid as "a normal matter among friendly countries under the current circumstances Sudan is going through."

He reiterated that Sudan would overcome the economic crisis very soon, saying "the country is promised with a great economic leap."

"What is happening now is the last chapter of the suffering," he noted.

Sudan has been suffering from a crisis of fuel and wheat shortage and lack of liquidity, which has prompted popular protests since Dec. 19 last year.

According to government statistics, at least 26 people have been killed during the protests. Enditem
