BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese major stock indices dropped slightly on Monday, with environmental protection and papermaking sectors suffering the heaviest losses.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.18 percent to close at 2,596.98. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.08 percent lower at 7,589.58.
Combined turnover of stocks in both indices shrank to 300 billion yuan (44.46 billion U.S. dollars) from roughly 313 billion yuan on Friday.
The environmental protection and papermaking sub-indices were down 1.77 percent and 1.51 percent respectively.
Bucking the trend, the sub-index for newly listed shares rose 2.35 percent. Five companies in the sector surged by the daily limit of 10 percent.
