ALGIERS, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will leave for Geneva on Sunday for medical examinations, according to a presidential statement on Thursday.

"President Bouteflika will leave on Feb. 24 for Geneva for a short time to have routine medical checkups," said the statement.

The 81-year-old president, who is seeking the fifth term in office in the forthcoming elections in April, has had several stays in hospital because of persistent health woes over more than a decade.

Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999, was hit by a stroke in 2013, which affected his mobility and speech and has since made his appearances on a wheelchair. Enditem
