BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Around 8,900 suspects were captured by police officers in a "hundred-day operation" against food and medicine-related crimes across the country, the Ministry of Public Security said Friday.

Launched in October 2018, around 7,100 criminal cases concerning food products, medicine, agricultural materials and tobacco were investigated, Zhang Zuoliang, an official in charge of public security management in the ministry, said at a press conference.

Among them were around 3,600 cases of food crimes, leading to the capture of some 5,100 suspects, Zhang said.

A series of criminal gangs were busted and hundreds of hidden sites producing fake medicine, and counterfeit liquor and health food products have been destroyed as a result of police agencies' intensified fight against such crimes, according to the ministry. Enditem
