BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police detained 83,668 suspects and cracked 57,519 cases during a 10-month campaign to crackdown on cybercrime since February 2018, the Ministry of Public Security said Thursday.

More than 13,000 people were seized for stealing and trading personal information, said the ministry at a press conference.

Police nationwide also intensified the crackdown on illegal activities by paid online ghostwriters, who flood online platforms and post biased comments, rumors or disinformation. Some criminal rings were found to have blackmailed others with malicious online posts.

During the campaign, more than 34,000 Internet companies received administrative punishment for online irregularities. Over 35,000 mobile apps with rogue programs were banned and around 4.29 million pieces of illegal information on the Internet were deleted, said the ministry.

Moreover, about 20,000 websites were shut down for spreading illegal information.

Remarkable outcomes have been achieved through the campaign, which has dramatically reduced online information about trading guns, explosives, restricted knives, drugs and individual privacy, said the ministry. Enditem
