BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's science and technology news from the past week:

-- China's lunar rover has conducted scientific detection on some stones on the far side of the moon, which might help scientists find out whether they are from outer space or native to the moon.

-- The China Manned Space Engineering Office announced that the core module of the country's space station, the Long March-5B carrier rocket and its payloads will be sent to the launch site in the second half of this year, to make preparations for the space station missions.

-- China's icebreaker Xuelong, also known as the Snow Dragon, is on its way back home from its 35th Antarctic research mission.

Crew members have made a series of research advances during the four-month-long journey, such as the completion of new buildings and supporting facilities in research bases, marine species surveys, underwater robot tests, and installation of new radar and solar telescopes.

-- The discovery of fossilized palm leaves on the cold and high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has led scientists to make new conclusions on when the plateau reached its current height.

-- Chinese researchers have developed a computer deep learning neural network for grading one type of liver cancer with high accuracy. The model shows the potential to be an asset to liver cancer treatment.

-- A Chinese research team has developed a new calcium-ion based energy storage device, which is proved to have high capacity and long cycling life at room temperature.

-- Chinese scientists have developed a nanogel that can be applied to textiles for durable antibacterial effects.

-- Scientists have discovered a hornet with a wingspan of 9.35 cm in southwest China's Yunnan Province, much larger than the previously known record of the species.

-- A Chinese research team used two critical genes to regulate the size of mice organs and bodies as similarly seen in the sci-fi movie "Ant-man."

-- Chinese scientists have developed a new material that can use light to efficiently and safely purify water.

- China's spending on research and development increased to 2.18 percent of its GDP last year, up by 0.06 percentage points, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
