1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Tuesday

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower Tuesday with the fentanyl, beverage, iron and steel sectors leading the losses.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.18 percent to close at 3,090.98, while the Shenzhen Component Index decreased 0.04 percent to 9,839.74.

Combined trading volume on the two indexes decreased to 775.62 billion yuan (around 115.66 billion U.S. dollars), from 832.65 billion yuan the previous trading day.

More stocks slipped, with losers outnumbering gainers by 727 to 673 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,033 to 1,027 in Shenzhen.

Fentanyl, liquor, coal, food, beverage, iron and steel shares were sluggish.

Bucking the trend, stocks related to hydrogen energy and Fujian Pilot Free Trade Zone saw a notable increase. For example, Jiangsu Huachang Chemical Co. Ltd., Meijin Energy and Xiamen Port Holding Group Co. Ltd. rose by the daily 10-percent limit to 7.92 yuan, 7.08 yuan and 8.6 yuan respectively.
