TEGUCIGALPA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people have died from severe dengue in Honduras so far this year, said Gustavo Urbina, department chief of arbovirus of the health ministry on Friday.

In recent weeks, three new deaths from the disease have been reported, he said.

The health ministry has reported 1,650 cases of severe dengue and 3,240 mild cases during 2019.

The municipalities most affected by the disease are Choloma, San Manuel, Pimienta, Villanueva, San Francisco de Yojoa, and Omoa, all in the Cortes department in the northwest of the country.

Urbina also said 47 cases of chikungunya and 39 cases of zika have been reported in the country.

Honduras ended 2018 with 9,114 cases of dengue, 3,897 more than that of 2017.

Similar to zika and chikungunya, dengue is a mosquito-borne tropical disease, the symptoms of which include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Enditem
