BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares closed mixed on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ending at 3239.66 points, down 0.16 percent.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.82 percent higher at 10,436.62 points.

The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 840 billion yuan (about 125 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 1.067 trillion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 766 to 650 at the Shanghai bourse and 1,306 to 772 in Shenzhen.

Chemical stocks retreated across the board after closing higher on Monday as media reported a chemical industry overhaul to be implemented in Jiangsu Province following a deadly blast that killed 78 people in Xiangshui County last month.

Anshan Hifichem Co., Ltd. led the loss, down by the daily limit of 10 percent to 51.81 yuan per share.

Enterprises considered to have stable growth outlook bucked the downward trend. Gree Electric Appliances, one of China's leading home appliance brands, gained by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 51.93 yuan per share.

Shares of communications equipment makers also demonstrated strong performances, led by Nanjing Panda Electronics Co., Ltd, which saw its share price jump 10 percent to 12.95 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, edged up 0.09 percent to close at 1,741.17 points Tuesday. Enditem
