DOHA, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Qatar Petroleum announced on Monday the launch of a tender for construction of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier fleet for its North Field Expansion (NEF) project.

"The invitation foresees initial delivery of 60 LNG carriers, with the potential to exceed 100 new carriers over the next 10 years," the company said in a press released published on its website.

The tender would increase the global LNG fleet by 11 percent to 19 percent. According to International Gas Union, there were 525 LNG carriers by the end of 2018.

The tender also includes options for replacements of Qatar's existing LNG fleet.

The NFE project will increase Qatar's LNG production capacity to 110 million tons per year (tpy) starting 2024 from 77 million tpy. Enditem
