HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The groundbreaking ceremony for Kai Tak Sports Park which is poised to become Hong Kong's biggest sport venue was held on Tuesday.

Located at Kowloon City which used to be Kai Tak Airport, Kai Tak Sports Park will see the 28-hectare site being developed into an urban oasis which integrates sports venues with retail, wellness, recreational and community spaces. The park is estimated to be completed in 2023.

Kai Tak Sports Park consists of four key facilities, namely Main Stadium, Indoor Sports Centre, Public Sports Ground and Open Spaces. With the theme "Pearl of the Orient" as its design inspiration, the Main Stadium has a capacity of 50,000 spectators.

"Together we are witnessing an important milestone in the delivery of the largest multi-purpose sports venue in Hong Kong. This Kai Tak Sports Park is the government's most significant investment in sports infrastructure in recent years," Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Carrie Lam said at the ceremony.

"When completed, it will play an important role in realizing our sports development policy in terms of attracting major international sports events, supporting our elite athletes and promoting community sports," she said. Enditem
