ISTANBUL -- Turkey's top electoral board on Tuesday ruled against one objection to the mayoral election in Istanbul raised by the ruling party, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) complained last week that thousands of ballots were cast by people who were "ineligible" to vote since they were dismissed from public services under previous government decrees. (Turkey-Istanbul-Election Dispute)

RAMALLAH -- Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye on Tuesday urged the U.S. Congress to recognize Palestine as a state.

TRIPOLI -- Libya's eastern-based army on Tuesday announced that it shot down a fighter jet of the UN-backed government, which tried to attack its airbase in southern Libya.

"Anti-missiles of Jufra airbase managed to shoot down a fighter jet of the terrorist militias (government forces) trying to strike the base this morning," the army's spokesman Ahmad al-Mismari said in a statement. (Libya-Warplane-Shootdown)

RABAT -- Moroccan security forces have foiled an attempt to smuggle nearly 7 tons of cannabis resin in the city of Casablanca, the interior ministry said Tuesday.

The banned substance was seized on board of a medium-duty truck and two utility vehicles, the statement said, adding that the drug's packaging reveals that it was probably intended to be smuggled by sea. (Morocco-Drug Smuggling) Enditem
