1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.12 percent, at 2,893.76.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.96 percent lower at 9,002.53.

Combined trading volume of the two indices stood at 488.82 billion yuan (around 72.31 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 538.085 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 823 to 570 on the Shanghai bourse, and 1,114 to 937 in Shenzhen.

Companies in lab-grown meat, gold, as well as planting and forestry were among the biggest gainers.

Harbin High-Tech(Group) Co. Ltd. saw its share price rise by the daily 10 percent limit to 6 yuan a share. Yantai Yuancheng Gold Co. Ltd. saw its share price rise by the daily limit of 10 percent, ending at 8.89 yuan per share.

Shares of breeding companies, banks and graphite electrode enterprises led the loss.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth, fell 1.48 percent to close at 1,481.87. Enditem
