BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's key education news from the past week:

-- AI at vocational skills competition

Students from across the country are working to showcase the skills of artificial intelligence (AI) during a national vocational students' skills competition which started Sunday.

Events involving big data, cloud computing, intelligent logistics and smart homes will be held between students from China's vocational schools at this year's competition.

-- Over 10 mln applicants for China's college entrance exam

More than 10 million students have applied to take part in China's annual national college entrance examination this year, Minister of Education Chen Baosheng said Monday.

Chen released the figure at a meeting on ensuring the smoothness of the examination, known as the gaokao in Chinese.

-- Int'l conference on AI, education

An international conference on artificial intelligence and education will be held on May 16 to 18 in Beijing to explore the application of AI technologies in education.

Co-organized by Chinese authorities and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the conference is themed on "Planning Education in the AI Era: Lead the Leap," and is expected to provide a platform for participants to discuss the capabilities required in the AI era and the building of educational systems that match with the development of AI.

-- MOE estimates increase of 65,000 vocational college teachers annually

China will provide centralized support to build a team of vocational college teachers, said an official with the Ministry of Education (MOE).

China plans to expand vocational college enrollment by 1 million this year to cultivate the talent of various professional skills to boost employment.

-- China expands higher vocational colleges to enroll more students

About 18 million square meters of school buildings are under construction to expand higher vocational education, and an additional 30 million square meters of buildings are needed in the next two years.

The State Council approved a plan in late April to expand the enrollment of higher vocational colleges by 1 million this year. Enditem
