1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Tuesday

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower Tuesday, with shares in agricultural industry leading the losses.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.69 percent to 2,883.61. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.71 percent lower at 9,038.36.

Combined trading volume of the two indices stood at 455.54 billion yuan (around 66.6 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 466.21 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,093 to 313 on the Shanghai bourse, and 1,534 to 550 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the agricultural sector were the biggest losers. Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co. Ltd. saw its share price dip 4.03 percent to 14.77 yuan a share.

Bucking the trend, shares in communication services sector posted better performance with China United Network Communications Ltd., one of the country's leading telecom giants, gaining 0.67 percent to 5.99 yuan apiece.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, went down 0.56 percent to close at 1,494.60. Enditem
