BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.91 percent, at 2,938.68 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.44 percent higher at 9,259.03 points.
Combined trading volume of the two exchanges stood at 512.8 billion yuan (around 74.7 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 455.54 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Gainers outnumbered losers by 1395 to 50 on the Shanghai bourse, and 1992 to 114 in Shenzhen.
Companies in distillery sector were the biggest gainers, with Kweichow Moutai Group seeing its price up 4.56 percent to 927 yuan a share.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.28 percent to close at 1,528.69 points Wednesday. Enditem
