BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Universal Picture's "A Dog's Journey" topped the Chinese mainland box office Monday, according to the China Movie Data Information Network.
The comedy-drama film grossed 23.95 million yuan (about 3.46 million U.S. dollars) on the day, with a total box office reaching 101 million yuan in the four days since its debut.
The film, directed by Gail Mancuso, is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron and is a sequel to the 2017 film "A Dog's Purpose," which moved many Chinese audiences to tears.
"A Dog's Journey" tells the story of Bailey, an elderly St. Bernard/Australian shepherd mix that finds the meaning of his own existence after searching for his purpose through several events and returns to his master at last.
It was followed by Hollywood's "Pokemon Detective Pikachu," which took in about 21 million yuan on its 11th day of being shown.
Coming in the third was Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame," which earned about 12 million yuan, bringing the total it has generated in the Chinese mainland box office to 4.22 billion yuan in the 27 days since its premiere. Enditem
