BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.49 percent, at 2,891.70 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.51 percent lower at 9,041.21 points.
Combined trading volume of the two exchanges stood at 469.3 billion yuan (around 70.04 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 479.47 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers by 1082 to 339 on the Shanghai bourse, and 1413 to 658 in Shenzhen.
Companies in the electronic information industry were among the biggest gainers, with average share price growing by 1.44%.
Ningbo Bird, a high-tech company, saw its share price rise by 10.05% to 4.38 yuan a share.
Companies in nonferrous metals were among the biggest losers.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.34 percent to close at 1,488.63 points. Enditem
