GUANGZHOU, May 22 (Xinhua) -- About 1.6 million tonnes of smuggled marble, worth 1.8 billion yuan (260 million U.S. dollars) were seized at customs in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

Twenty-four suspects were caught at the same time, local customs officers announced Wednesday.

Customs offices of Guangzhou and the city of Shenzhen started a joint operation at the end of April. Investigation showed that the lead suspect, surnamed Hu, had been smuggling marble from abroad by falsely declaring marble as low-cost stone to avoid tax.

The case is under investigation. Enditem
