SHANGHAI, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai customs cracked down two sugar smuggling gangs and caught more than 40 suspects, local customs office announced on Monday.

More than 2,800 tonnes of sugar worth over 8 million yuan (1.15 million U.S. dollars) and five ships were confiscated, customs officers said.

An investigation found that the gangs have been purchasing sugar from Thailand and using small ships to receive the sugar from other ships on international waters since February.

Evidence shows that the gangs have smuggled a total of more than 30,000 tonnes of sugar worth about 270 million yuan.

The gangs were busted on May 29, and the case is under further investigation. Enditem
