ABUJA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Four people including a soldier were killed by gunmen during an attack on a village in central Nigeria's Plateau state, a local official said on Wednesday.

Timothy Datong, a state legislator, said at least 54 houses were razed by the attackers late Monday, leaving many residents homeless in Rong village near Ganawuri district of Riyom local government area.

"The state of insecurity and spate of killings in communities across the state is alarming," said Datong.

He described the current situation in the area as "scary," noting many farmlands were also destroyed.

Local police said they are yet to know the identities and motives of the attackers.

"An investigation is ongoing to unravel the identity of the attackers. Once we can get them, they will be made to face the full wrath of the law," said state police chief, Isaac Akinmoyede.

The police chief, however, said a combined team of security personnel had been deployed to the area to avert future attacks and forestall a breakdown of law and order. Enditem
