SHANGHAI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The movie-streaming mobile platform Smart Cinema will launch an overseas version of its app in North America in partnership with U.S. distributor Well Go USA Entertainment, the company announced Tuesday during the ongoing 22nd Shanghai International film festival.

After beginning its run, the mobile app will have Chinese films with bilingual subtitles, which are popular in the domestic market, screened in North America, said Jack Gao, CEO of Smart Cinema.

The platform will serve overseas Chinese as well as overseas fans interested in Chinese films. The first batch of films include 12 domestic films such as Red Flowers and Green Leaves, the Heart Of the Champion and the Twins.

With the continuous development and expansion of China's film industry, China has rapidly become a big producer and consumer of films. However, compared with Hollywood films which have made twice as much money overseas as at home, the booming Chinese film industry hasn't made the same commercial returns overseas as it has at home.

"Previously, limited by the traditional model, Chinese films have few distribution and screening channels overseas," said Gao. "In the era of mobile Internet, every mobile phone can be a movie projector to offer Chinese films to overseas markets."

Smart Cinema released films in Italy and Spain in November 2018, and it will expand its business to more countries and regions such as the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Enditem
