BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are highlights of China's key cultural news from the past week:

-- French musical "Notre Dame de Paris" to be staged in China

The smash-hit French musical "Notre Dame de Paris," based on the eponymous novel by Victor Hugo, will be staged from July 18 to August 11 in Shanghai.

The musical tells a love tragedy between a young and beautiful gypsy girl named Esmeralda and Quasimodo, the hunchback bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral.

Since its premiere in Paris in 1998, the musical has enjoyed worldwide success.

-- Short video contest held to seek China stories

China kicked off a global short video contest to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The contest, titled "@China," will be soliciting short video works on feelings or stories about China until August 15.

-- 191 performances planned for China children's theatre festival

A total of 191 performances will be staged in Beijing during the upcoming month-long theatre festival for children.

The 9th China Children's Theatre Festival, themed on bringing theater into children's lives, will last from July 6 to August 11. Some of the shows will be performed in cities such as Tianjin, Jinan and Chengdu.

Participating foreign groups come from more than a dozen countries including Romania, Denmark, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Italy.

-- Children's troupe stage public welfare shows in Tibet

A troupe from the China Children Art Theater performed over 10 public welfare shows for children from June 10 to 16 in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The shows performed in Lhasa and Shigatse in Tibet are part of a program initiated by the theater in 2018 to enable more children in border towns to enjoy outstanding child plays.

--Chinese opera season kicks off in Beijing

China kicked off a two-month opera season in Beijing, presenting a diversity of traditional Chinese operas.

The event will provide audiences with a feast of Chinese operas including Pingju Opera, Qinqiang Opera and Chao Opera, all of which are different opera types with local distinctions.

The performances will last until mid-August. Enditem
