1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.94 percent to close at 3,015.26 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.32 percent lower at 9,419.84 points.

The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 488.1 billion yuan (about 71 billion U.S. dollars), down from 538.7 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most stocks lost, with losers outnumbering gainers by 1,077 to 340 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,674 to 432 in Shenzhen.

Liquor and oil sectors were the biggest losers, with the sub-indices down 2.56 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively. Kweichow Moutai went down 3.62 percent to finish at 987.9 yuan, while Sinopec, the country's biggest oil refiner, dropped 1.1 percent to 5.38 yuan.

Bucking the trend, shipbuilders saw strong gains of 5.86 percent, with CSSC Science & Technology Co. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 1.67 percent to close at 1,544.36 points. Enditem
