LHASA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The sewage treatment ability has improved in Lhasa, the capital city of China's southwest Tibet Autonomous Region, which will help better protect "Asia's water tower" -- the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The city government has invested 661 million yuan (95.9 million U.S. dollars) on building five sewage treatment plants since 2010 and has brought the city's sewage treatment ability up to 193,000 tonnes per day.

Another five sewage treatment plants currently under construction in five different counties in the city are expected to be put into operation this year. The new plants will be capable of processing 23,000 tonnes of sewage per day, local authorities said.

In 2010, Tibet's first sewage treatment plant was put into use in Qamdo. Currently, the region has finished building 16 sewage treatment plants. Enditem
