BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A recent survey by China Youth Daily found that younger generations of Chinese are showing a growing sense of independence and initiative in choosing their colleges and majors.

The survey, jointly conducted by the newspaper's social survey center and an online survey website among 1,975 students who attended college entrance examinations, revealed that 68.6 percent of the graduates made their own decisions on colleges and majors without consulting too much with their parents, and the proportion with students of the "post-2000s generation" registered highest among all ages.

A total of 79 percent of the "post-2000s generation" said they made their decisions independently while the figures for those born in the 1990s and the 1980s were 73.6 percent and 66 percent respectively.

Among all respondents, over 25 percent said they still needed to rely on advices from their parents or teachers.

"I made my choice by myself, but my teachers helped me a lot. I believe they are more experienced and I value their opinions on our profession," Zhu Ting, an arts student in north China's Hebei Province, told the paper.

The survey also showed that the development prospects of a major was the greatest factor students consider in making their decisions, as 66 percent of the people surveyed said this is their priority concern.

Locations and rankings of the colleges and personal interests are also among important elements in their considerations, it said. Enditem
